Bowen does not work effectively with many other therapies, it is therefore advisable that other ‘hands on’ therapies are not applied less than 7 days before or after Bowen as these could interfere with the subtle process set in motion.
The technique consists of a series of gentle pressure moves, using thumbs and fingers on precise points on the body, making rolling type moves across muscle, tendon and soft tissue, with the aim of stimulating energy into the muscles and soft tissue. This can be performed over light clothing. There are short breaks between moves to allow the brain to take note of the action performed.
- The treatment usually lasts about 45 minutes.
- We do not diagnose or treat specific conditions, the body is treated as a whole.
- We do not prescribe or challenge medication.
- We do not make claims.
What Should I Expect After Treatment?
Initially, on sitting up after a treatment, you may feel light headed. That will pass quickly. You may develop a headache and slight nausea and pain in one or more areas of your body. This is all possible and quite normal. Your body is getting used to realignment from a new set of instructions. On the day of treatment try not to sit for more than half an hour without a break. You may take a warm bath, 2 pain killers and or take a hot pad to the affected area. Keep warm. Drink plenty of water, a litre a day is good. Improvement is likely to unfold over the next few days to a week.
The recommended period of time between treatments is 5 – 10 days. There are, of course, exceptions when you can be treated more than once a week ie re injury, surgery, immobility, pregnancy, brain damage especially stroke victims and terminal illness. Please don’t forget the benefits of treating relatives and carers!
Is Aftercare Necessary?
Yes after care is essential. The three key elements of after care are Water, Walking and one Week.
WATER – essential after a Bowen Treatment as it generally increases blood supply to nerve endings and affects movement of lymph around the body. It is sensible to set a daily target, say 500ml and build up to the required amount.
You can calculate this using the following simple formula –
Your body weight in kgs x 2 divided by 100 = your daily requirement in litres.
A common reaction to Bowen is headaches and this is the most common symptom of dehydration. A good comparison is a hangover with headache, dry mouth and nausea. This is due to the body, in eliminating the alcohol, drawing on the body’s water reserves to flush through the kidneys.
In the same way, the brain identifies an area where elimination or hydration is needed and will call on water supplies and use the lymphatic system to flush out dysfunctional debris and toxins.
Although drinks other than water are considered fluids they don’t count as water. Non decaffeinated tea and coffee act as diuretics and leach out even more water from the system. Juices and herbal teas are identified by the body as foods and so are metabolized differently to water.
WALK – This assists lymph and water to move around the body. Adding an inward supply of water will create movement, current and energy. Imagine a stagnant pond – no inward or outward flow of water, pond life static and limited, very little oxygen and plenty of scum and muck. A body with little movement and fresh water can be described similarly!
On the day of treatment we therefore ask you not to sit for more than half an hour at a time before standing and moving around for a few seconds. (Ever wondered why dogs periodically get up and shake!) This firstly prevents stiffness or soreness that might emanate from a treatment and secondly movement and muscle contraction assists movement of lymph around the body.
WEEK – The recommended period of time between treatments is 5 – 10 days. There are, of course exceptions when you can be treated more than once a week ie re injury, pre and post surgery, immobility, pregnancy other than the last 120 days unless wanting to induce baby, brain damage especially stroke victims and terminal illness. If you are a relative or a carer please don’t forget the benefits of Bowen for yourself.
